Zero-Click Search
A zero-click search is a query fully answered inside an AI-generated response, with no need for the user to click through to any website. It's the outcome that makes citation, not ranking, the metric that actually determines whether a brand gets seen at all.
Why it matters
One February 2026 analysis of AI referral traffic found the large majority of Google AI Mode sessions end without an external click at all. When most of the audience for a query never leaves the answer surface, being cited inside that answer matters more than driving a click ever did.

- Answer Engine
An answer engine is an AI-powered system, like ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google AI Overviews, that responds to a query with a direct, synthesized answer and cited sources, rather than a ranked list of links a user has to click through to find their own answer.
- Conversational Search
Conversational search is a natural-language search interaction where a user asks a question the way they'd ask a person, and receives one synthesized answer instead of a page of ranked links. It's the interface pattern behind ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google's AI Mode.
