Answer Engine
An answer engine is an AI-powered system, like ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google AI Overviews, that responds to a query with a direct, synthesized answer and cited sources, rather than a ranked list of links a user has to click through to find their own answer.
Why it matters
Answer engines compress the buyer journey: instead of ten blue links, the user gets one answer naming two or three tools. A brand that isn't in that answer isn't on page two, it simply doesn't exist for that query, which is why answer engine optimization has emerged as its own discipline alongside classic SEO.

A generative engine is an AI system, such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google's AI Overviews, that answers a query by synthesizing one direct response from multiple retrieved sources, instead of returning a ranked list of links for the user to click through themselves.
- Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)
Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring content so an AI assistant can read it, verify it, and name it directly in the answer it gives a user. It describes functionally the same goal as GEO, with roots more in commercial SEO tooling than in academic research.
