Generative Engine
A generative engine is an AI system, such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google's AI Overviews, that answers a query by synthesizing one direct response from multiple retrieved sources, instead of returning a ranked list of links for the user to click through themselves.
Why it matters
This structural shift, from a ranking algorithm to a generation step that decides what to say and who to credit, is the entire premise GEO responds to. A page that used to rank #3 in Google can be completely absent from a generative engine's answer even when it's the best source available, because ranking and citation are governed by different mechanics.

- Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)
Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of structuring and positioning content so generative AI systems, including ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Claude, retrieve it, quote it, and cite it when answering a question, rather than optimizing for a ranked list of links the way traditional SEO does.
- Answer Engine
An answer engine is an AI-powered system, like ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google AI Overviews, that responds to a query with a direct, synthesized answer and cited sources, rather than a ranked list of links a user has to click through to find their own answer.
- Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG)
Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) is the architecture behind most AI search: the system retrieves a set of relevant documents or passages at query time, then generates its answer grounded in that retrieved material, rather than purely from what it learned during training.
