Citation Panel

A citation panel is the list of sources an AI engine displays alongside a generated answer, typically as numbered links or a sidebar, separate from any inline citations embedded in the answer text itself. Appearing in a citation panel without an inline citation still counts as a mention, but carries less prominence than being cited directly within the answer.

Why it matters

Citation rate and citation share are usually measured against panel appearances, since the panel is the most consistently structured, machine-readable citation surface across engines, which makes it the practical baseline for most AI-visibility tracking tools. A brand that only ever shows up in the panel and never inline is getting counted as cited, but is missing the stronger signal of being the source a specific claim was actually attributed to.
