AI Visibility

AI visibility is whether a brand appears at all in AI-generated answers for a defined set of relevant queries, regardless of whether that appearance rises to the level of a formal citation.

Why it matters

AI visibility is the umbrella concept sitting above the more specific metrics in this category: mention rate, citation rate, and share of voice are all different ways of measuring it. A brand with zero AI visibility in a category has nothing else worth measuring yet.

AI visibility cannot be read from a single prompt. In a study by SparkToro and Gumshoe.ai, about 600 volunteers asked ChatGPT, Claude and Google's AI the same brand-recommendation questions close to 3,000 times, and the chance of getting the same list of brands twice was below 1 in 100. A visibility figure only means something as a frequency: the share of repeated runs, over a fixed set of prompts, in which the brand appears.

To measure it, write 20 to 30 prompts a buyer would type before knowing any brand name, run each one several times on every engine you track, and count the runs that name you, engine by engine. Our guide on how to measure AI share of voice details the method and explains why one averaged score across engines hides more than it shows.
